Stargate is OpenAI's basic facility platform and is the key to achieving the long-term vision of "promoting the benefits of AI to everyone".
After continuing the Gate of Afghan Stars, OpenAI announced on the 31st that it will launch the Gate of Norway, the first AI data center project planned by the "OpenAI for Countries" in Europe, landing on Narvik in northern Norway.
Stargate Norway is expected to provide 230 MW of computer power with a scale of 290 MW in the future. This facility target will deploy 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026, and will continue to expand in the next few years.
Stargate Norway's partners include Nscale and Aker. The former is an experienced AI-based facility supplier in the construction of European and American cloud-based facilities, while the latter has a century-old history in the energy and industrial fields. Stargate Norway is jointly owned by Nscale and Aker in a 55-5 combined asset format, and is designed and built by Nscale. OpenAI is one of the first companies to purchase computing power.
Stargate Norway is first opened to Norway's AI ecosystem to ensure that local new companies and research institutions can obtain computing power. The extra computing power will be provided to public and private sectors such as the UK and Northern Europe to meet regional needs and accelerate the development of the European AI ecosystem. At the same time, OpenAI cooperated with the Norwegian government to explore opportunities to promote AI and help realize Norway's own AI goals.
Navik has rich hydraulic power generation resources, low energy, cool climate and mature industrial foundation, making it an ideal point to provide large-scale AI computing power. The Stargate Norway plan completely uses renewable energy to supply power, and is expected to use a liquid cooling system with a closed circulation ring and direct contact with the wafer to ensure the highest efficiency of heat dissipation. In addition, the heat generated by GPUs will be available for local low-carbon production.
Millions of people and businesses in Europe use ChatGPT and its API every day. OpenAI notes that in Norway alone, the number of users who have been active in ChatGPT per week in the past year has grown 4 times, most of whom are under 35 years old and include thousands of local developers. The launch of Stargate Norway in the future will not only contribute to the development of Norway’s AI, but will also help OpenAI expand its business.
